What is Wimbledon

Wimbledon, officially The Championships, is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis and the only one played on grass. The tournament takes place every year at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London and is widely seen as the most traditional of the four majors, with its own etiquette you won't find at any other event: think of the strict all-white dress code and the famous strawberries and cream.

Both the men's and women's draws feature 128 players competing for the title in a straight knockout format. The men play best-of-5 sets, the women best-of-3. For the full round-by-round breakdown, check the page on the Wimbledon schedule.

Where to follow Wimbledon

In Belgium, broadcast rights for Wimbledon sit with Eurosport (Warner Bros. Discovery), with streaming via Max or discovery+, under a contract that runs through 2027. Sporza (VRT) does not air the tournament live, and neither does it for any of the four Grand Slams. Napoleon Sports itself does not broadcast any video, but shows a live scoreboard for both draws. You'll find the full overview, including a comparison with the other Grand Slams, on the page about the Wimbledon livestream.

Good to know: a Sporza article about a result is not a broadcast right. Rights to the matches themselves sit with the pay channel Eurosport, not the public broadcaster.

Tickets: the Ballot and The Queue

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam with two entirely different, official ways to buy tickets: the Public Ballot, a draw run through a myWimbledon account that usually opens in September the year before, and The Queue, the famous daily line at the gates where a limited number of tickets per court goes on sale. Both routes give access to the same courts, but the approach differs a great deal. You'll find the full explanation, including indicative prices, on the page about Wimbledon tickets.

Grass, roof and all-white kit: the Wimbledon tradition

Grass is the fastest surface of the four Grand Slams, with a low, quick bounce that rewards attacking net play and big serving. Centre Court has had a retractable roof since 2009, and No.1 Court since 2019, making the tournament far less exposed to rain delays than it used to be. Wimbledon is also the only Grand Slam with a strict all-white dress code for every player. You'll find more detail on these quirks on the page about the schedule and tournament structure.

Wimbledon in the Grand Slam season

Wimbledon is the third of the four Grand Slams on the tennis calendar, coming after the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and before the US Open. The switch from the slow clay of Roland Garros to the fast grass of Wimbledon, often just a few weeks apart, is one of the biggest adjustments of the tennis year for players. Doing well at Roland Garros doesn't automatically translate into good results at Wimbledon, and the reverse holds too.
