How the Serie A standings work: points and tiebreakers
A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point for each team, and a loss 0 points. After 38 matchdays, the team with the most points determines the final standings. If two (or more) clubs are level on points, a fixed order of criteria applies: first the result of the head-to-head matches between the teams involved (points from those meetings), then the goal difference in those head-to-head matches, followed by the overall goal difference across the whole season, then the number of goals scored, and only as an absolute last resort, a draw.
There are two places in the table where an exception to that order applies. If two teams finish level on points in first place, the head-to-head result does not decide it; instead an extra 90-minute decider is played, with no extra time: if the score is still level after 90 minutes, penalties follow immediately. If three teams are level at the top, a shortened mini-table is drawn up first, based on the head-to-head results between those three clubs, to narrow the field down to two teams for the decider. At the bottom of the table, a different exception has applied since the FIGC rule change of 7 July 2023: if the team in 17th place (the last safe spot) and the team in 18th place (the first relegation spot) finish level on points, no single match follows, but a two-legged play-off, with the second leg played at the ground of the team with the better head-to-head record in the regular league; if the aggregate score is still level after both legs, straight to penalties, with no extra time. The very first time this was applied, in June 2023, the play-off was still a single match at a neutral venue (Hellas Verona won that one 3-1 against Spezia), a format that has since been dropped. Since 26 May 2026, any play-off (title or relegation) is also scrapped entirely if a club involved is playing a European final in that same period; in that case, the head-to-head result decides immediately. Everywhere else in the table, the head-to-head result remains the deciding factor.
Promotion, relegation and European qualification zones
Where a team sits in the standings determines more than just who becomes champion. At the top of the table, clubs compete for a European spot: the highest-ranked teams qualify for the Champions League, and the places after that usually earn a spot in the Europa League and the Conference League. Exactly how many places that amounts to depends on the UEFA access list and that season's coefficient ranking, so it can shift slightly from year to year.
At the bottom of the table, the relegation zone awaits: the lowest-ranked clubs drop down to Serie B, with (as described above) a possible play-off at the boundary between 17th and 18th place in the event of a tie. What the standings mean for your Serie A bets
The standings are more than an overview: they also drive a range of bets. In the outright markets, you can bet on who ultimately becomes national champion, who finishes in the top four and so qualifies for the Champions League, or which team gets relegated. As the season progresses, many bettors base their choices on the extra matchdays that become available as a reference point.
