Kick-off times and broadcast slots: why not every match starts at the same time
The exact kick-off time of a match is set by the broadcast rights holders, not by the clubs themselves. Under the current UK TV rights deal, which runs from 2025/26 through 2028/29, there are a number of fixed time slots. In Belgian time, one hour ahead of the UK clock, that works out to Saturday 13:30 and 18:30, Sunday 15:00 and 17:30, and Monday or Friday 21:00. One notable detail is the traditional Saturday "3pm blackout": between 15:45 and 18:15 Belgian time on a Saturday, no match may be broadcast live in the UK at all, a rule designed to protect attendances at matches in the lower English divisions, and it still applies for the 2026/27 season. Since the current rights cycle began, every Sunday match at 15:00 Belgian time is now guaranteed to be televised, which was not always the case before. The competition aims to confirm the exact kick-off times and broadcast picks at least six weeks in advance between August and December, and at least five weeks in advance between January and May, although a match can still move at shorter notice because of European commitments. That is exactly why giving a specific kick-off time on this page would not be useful: it changes from round to round.
